UH Marine Center Located in Honolulu Harbor, the UH Marine Center is responsible for coordinating operations on and maintaining the 186' R/V Kilo Moana (KM), the 40' R/V Kaunānā, the ROV Luʻukai, and other small vessels.

R/V Kaunānā
R/V Kaunānā is a 40’ aluminum-hulled catamaran workboat that has been outfitted to support coastal oceanographic research and intended to support day-time operations in the main Hawaiian Islands. In June 2023, R/V Kaunānā completed her sea trials and is now operational.

R/V Kilo Moana
The R/V Kilo Moana is a 186' Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) vessel owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by the University of Hawai‘i Marine Center. The ship acts as a multi-purpose oceanographic research vessel with extensive equipment for geophysical, physical oceanographic, meteorological, and radioisotope research.

Research Skiffs (HIMB) For work within Kāneʻohe Bay, there are four 17′ Boston Whalers with Honda 40 hp outboard engines. For work outside Kāneʻohe Bay, there is a 22′ Boston Whaler Outrage with twin Yamaha 90 hp outboards and a 22′ Boston Whaler Guardian with twin Yamaha 115 hp outboards.

Lu‘ukai Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Rated to a depth of 6000 m and designed for maximum maneuverability and mission flexibility in the deep ocean. It can collect specimens, characterize substrates, capture video and still images, monitor ocean properties and perform specialized tasks directed by a shipboard operator.

Towed Sonar Systems The Hawai‘i Mapping Research Group (HMRG) currently maintains and operates three towed bathymetric sidescan sonar systems (MR1, IMI120, IMI30) that provide a wide range of mapping capabilities and ocean sensing capabilities.

Ocean Gliders Seagliders are buoyancy driven autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) that fly through the water with extremely modest energy requirements using changes in buoyancy for thrust coupled with a stable, low-drag, hydrodynamic shape.
