Field & Research Stations

The diversity and quality of SOEST field and research stations are some of the many drivers behind faculty research productivity and student achievement. Our students often spend as much time learning in the field as they do in the classroom, at sites throughout the state.

  • UH Marine Center (UHMC) logo
UH Marine Operations Located in Honolulu Harbor, UHMO is responsible for coordinating operations on and maintaining the 186'  R/V Kilo Moana (KM) and the 223' R/V Ka‘imikai-O-Kanaloa (KOK) as well as several small boats; manned submersibles; remotely operated, autonomous and towed underwater vehicles; and ocean gliders.
  • Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology at Coconut Island Coconut Island is a private research island offering world-class lab, field, and genetic facilities for faculty, students, and visiting students and convenient access to a diverse range of marine environments.
  • Kewalo Marine Laboratory (KML)
Kewalo Marine Lab Located on a two-acre, ocean-front site in urban Honolulu, Kewalo Marine Lab provides support for faculty, students, and visiting researchers focused on the study of marine biodiversity, human activity on the marine environment, and explorations of coral reef ecosystems.
  • Hawai‘i Infrasound Laboratory Operating listening stations measuring low-frequency sounds as part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, researching acoustic source processes, propagation, instrumentation, signal and array processing, and developing software.
