Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R)

All scientific data collected aboard the R/V Kilo Moana are logged aboard ship and later archived. The raw data are sent to the NSF-funded Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) within 60 days of cruise end. The cleaned data is made available to the NOAA National Centers for Enviromental Data (NCEI) within a year of the cruise.

Processing the data archived is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator (PI). Data requests should be made to the national archive or to the PI, if the cruise data cannot be not found in a national archive. However, data may not necessarily be archived at R2R or a national archive for cruises not funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) (e.g., charters from foreign countries or private individuals).

Data from many sensors are logged continuously during transits and station operations, while others are logged on an as-needed basis. For data archiving and transmittal to R2R, data are grouped into 3 groups: Underway Data, Multibeam Data, Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) Data. Underway data may include Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD), echosounder, expendable probe, fluorometer, gravimeter, magnetometer, meteorology, navigation, partial pressure of dissolved oxygen, sea surface sound velocity, subbottom, thermosalinograph, and winch information. Multibeam and ADCP data, although technically part of the Underway Data, are segregated into separate archives, partly because these sensors often produce large volumes of information.

The following table presents a summary of data collected on the R/V Kilo Moana since its commissioning in 2001. The list includes general data about the cruise: cruise name, PI, mission, dates of departure and arrival, and ports. It also shows whether geophysical and underway data have been submitted to R2R; are available for download at NCEI; or for the ADCP data, whether processed data are accessible through the Joint Archive for ADCP Data.
