UNOLS and UHMC Shared Equipment

UNOLS provides a number of winches, wires and other shared used equipment. The assets on the Shared Equipment List have been provided through funding from NSF and other U.S. Government agency grants to OTG. These items are made available to users in the UNOLS community without a user charge. The UHMC also has a number of winches and capstans that are available for use, but are not permanent equipment on the Kilo Moana.

All requests for use of these assets must be made to the Tech Manager, who is responsible for scheduling use of the available shared-use equipment in conjunction with equipment custodians. Please check the calendar and complete the request form on the Equipment Reservations page. Requests for equipment will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis, and in the event of conflicts in equipment commitments, priority will be given to projects using the assets aboard the Kilo Moana. Reasonable efforts will be made to secure alternate arrangements for similar assets with other institutions if a commitment conflict arises, although loans of this nature frequently incur additional charges.

Slack Tension Unit (STU)

Forklifts, Cranes and Storage

- For approved mobilization prior to a cruise, a 20’ x 10’ space will be made available without charge for up to two weeks prior to a cruise. The same space can be made available without charge for up to 3 days after a cruise.
- For other work, a 20’ x 10’ space will cost $50/day ($ 0.25/sq.ft.) for each day of use. Larger space can be provided if it is available and will be charged at the same cost per sq. ft.
- Workspace at UHMC’s Pier 35 and Sand Island facilities can be made available to groups affiliated with UH. The cost for that space is $0.75/sq.ft. per year. An annual inventory of space usage is conducted in July and invoices are issued at that time. For container storage, this equates to $150/year for a 20’ container and $300/year for a 40’ container.
