This talk will discuss the journey of the Maker Buoy, a low-cost open-source drifter design started in 2018. Since then, the design has evolved into several form-factors for in-situ collection, and transmission of environmental data via SatCom. As of 2025, over 400 Maker Buoy devices have been produced for the educational, research, and commercial communities.
