Parameterizations of wave-ice interactions, in particular for wave attenuation due to sea ice, are needed to improve the capabilities of spectral wave forecasting models in applications to the polar regions. For this purpose, a linear continuum model is proposed based on a two-layer formulation where the floating sea ice is described as a poro-visco-elastic medium and the underlying ocean is viewed as a weakly compressible fluid. An exact dispersion relation is derived for plane wave solutions and numerical estimates are obtained for its complex roots. Comparison with existing viscoelastic models is provided on predictions of attenuation rate as a function of wave frequency. Tests are also conducted against laboratory and field measurements, providing calibration and estimation of effective material parameters from the data fitting. Additional insight is gained by performing direct numerical simulations of nonlinear waves propagating in broken floe fields, to assess the role of scattering and nonlinearity in the attenuation process.
