Students in the ORE 783 Capstone class have been working on the Hilo Bay Improvement Project. The purpose of the project is twofold: (1) to investigate the feasibility of adding an engineered breach or a wave energy converter into the Hilo breakwater to improve water quality issues in Hilo Bay and (2) to investigate a breakwater head redesign to dissipate wave energy coming into Hilo Harbor and reduce coastal erosion in the surrounding area.
The first phase of the project involved determining the environmental design parameters impacting the breakwater and harbor. The determination of operating wave conditions, 50 & 100-year design storm events, wave setup, and the minimum flow rate necessary to improve water quality in the bay will be discussed. Conceptual designs of the breakwater head retrofit, breach, and overtopping wave energy converter will also be discussed. The remainder of the project will be presented at the December 7 seminar.
