Seminar: Motion Simulation and Risk Assessment of Dropped Objects in Offshore Operations

Objects may accidentally fall from offshore platforms during lifting operations and may cause potential personnel and property damage in the offshore oil and gas industry. In this presentation, the author will briefly introduce an online database of potential and actual dropped object incidents – DORIS (Dropped Object Register of Incidents and Statistics) at first. Then the author will give an overview of current classification rules or guidance about dropped objects. After that, the author will focus on the development of an in-house tool, that is, Dropped Objects Simulator (DROBS), including the motion simulations of dropped cylindrical objects in 3D. DROBS can be used to predict the trajectory of dropped objects in offshore operations, and can be further integrated into DNV’s recommended practice (DNV-RP- F107) for the optimization of pipeline layout design. Finally, the author will introduce on-going research projects, such as 3D printing of container models and their drop tests at the towing tank.
