Dr. Michael Foley is a senior coastal engineer, principal investigator, and project manager for the Resilient and Sustainable Engineering (RiSE) team at Oceanit. He has worked on a diverse range of projects including beach restoration, artificial reefs, shoreline erosion, harbor protection, flood risk evaluation/mitigation, and repair of coastal structures, drainage systems and reservoirs/dams. His practice aims to design and implement holistic responses to climate change impacts on shoreline and island communities; with a specialty in analysis and design of systems in the coastal and riparian zones, field data reconnaissance and evaluation, advanced technology for real-time coastal monitoring, and environmental documentation and permitting. In this talk, Michael will cover some of the underlaying issues behind Hawaii’s ongoing shoreline erosion crises. He will discuss coastal engineering concepts, designs and technologies that may help address the problem. The focus of his suggested approach is nature-based and systems thinking.
