Eleanor Bates is a PhD student in the Marine Geology and Geochemistry division of the Department of Oceanography at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa working with Dr. Nick Hawco. She received a BS in chemistry modified with environmental studies from Dartmouth College, where she investigated platinum-group elements in seawater through the GEOTRACES program. Eleanor’s current research focuses on developing a time-series of iron and other metal micronutrients at Station ALOHA. On cruises with the Hawaii Ocean Time-series program, she collects a variety of samples to look at trace metal export from the surface ocean, iron uptake by phytoplankton, anthropogenic iron sources to the ocean, and more.
