SEMINAR: DR. KAWIKA WINTER – HOW SCIENCE INFORMS POLICY

Dr. Kawika Winter will be speaking on how science informs policy. Dr. Winter is a trans-disciplinary ecologist who has focused his career on the nexus of research, Indigenous stewardship, and policy–particularly in the spheres of conservation and sustainability. Prior to returning to academia as the Director of the He`eia National Estuarine Research Reserve in 2018, he spent 13 years as the Director of Limahuli Garden and Preserve on the island of Kaua`i. While there, Dr. Winter was instrumental in establishing the Hāʻena Community-based Subsistence Fishing Area, the first fully functioning CBSFA in the world. He currently holds several faculty appointments at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, including at Hawai`i Institute of Marine Biology, in Natural Resources and Environmental Management, and in Botany, Within this context, he is a strong advocate for reciprocal research between the University and People of Place for the benefit of all who call Hawai`i home. Aside from his faculty appointments, Dr. Winter serves on various committees at the state and national levels that create, set, and interpret science-driven policy. These include, but are not limited to, the White House’s Ocean Research Advisory Panel, the Sanctuary Advisory Council for NOAA’s Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, and the State’s Endangered Species Recovery Committee.
