About Us

The Coastal Research Collaborative (CRC) is a research program at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, that is funded through the Office of Naval Research and led by Dr. Chip Fletcher.  CRC is an affiliation of experts spanning physical and social sciences, community design, economics, and policy spread across the Mānoa campus working to better understand challenges related to environmental change. We study and model various flood risks, coastal erosion and land loss, groundwater inundation and storm drain failure, community design, extreme weather, and compound events, all through the lens of environmental change.  Our work requires cross-disciplinary and integrated investigation on a range of spatial and temporal scales. CRC’s research products are developed for use by communities and decision makers in Hawaiʻi with an emphasis on integrating efforts between Hawaiʻi’s communities and Department of Defense facilities. 

The “Collaborative” in Coastal Research Collaborative reflects our commitment to interdisciplinary research and teamwork. We bring together experts from diverse fields, including physical and social sciences, community design, economics, and policy, to produce high-quality, reliable data. By integrating knowledge across disciplines, our research meaningfully benefits coastal communities.
