Abstract:
UCAR is a nonprofit consortium of 123 North American colleges and universities with a mission to lead Earth system science (ESS) through partnership, innovation, and services. UCAR fulfills this mission through the two entities it manages, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the UCAR Community Programs (UCP). UCAR has managed NCAR on behalf of the National Science Foundation since 1960. NCAR supports the ESS community through the provision of major research facilities with basic and applied research in collaboration with the university community. UCP supports the ESS community in education and training, workforce development, Earth observations and data services, and research-to-operations transition. A major focus of UCP is making sure the science from NCAR and UCAR member universities is translated in novel ways to be useful for a variety of audiences sensitive to weather and climate (e.g., federal agencies, the private sector, operational organizations, and the general public).
As part of their missions, NCAR and UCP offer many research and education opportunities for students, including undergraduate internships, graduate and postdoctoral fellowships.
