Saturday May 4
8:00 AM-4:30 PM
Field Trip to Waiheʻe Tunnel, Friendship Garden, and Heʻeia State Park, led by Julia Hammer and Scott Rowland
Field Trip Information:
The field trip on Saturday May 4 visits the windward side of Koʻolau volcano, with stops in the vicinity of Kaneohe. We'll examine outstanding dike outcrops, contemplate the rift zone from a short hike toward Oneawa Hills, and put our hands on boulders interpreted as Koʻolau caldera breccia. No trip would be complete without a head-scratching discussion of rejuvenation volcanism, so we will have at least one stop so-dedicated. A highlight of the trip will be a tour into the Waiheʻe dike tunnel, where we travel inside the mountain 1500' to the dike that impounds the aquifer serving the freshwater needs of 40% of windward Oahu residents.
We will meet at 8 am at Makiki District Park, where you can park your cars and load into vans. Vans will return to Makiki District Park by 4:30 pm. Lunch will be provided. Attendance on the Waiheʻe tour is limited (by the Board of Water Supply) to 20, so participation on that leg of the trip is offered on a first-come first-serve basis. Those who cannot join us in the tunnel, or are tunnel-averse, are welcome to meet us at other stops. (A timetable and list of stops will be distributed in advance.)
