22 people attended PODS II. From the 15 returned survey results and web research on the remaining participants, 16 of the PODS II attendees are currently in academia, 4 are in government positions, and 2 are working in private companies.
“It was an excellent experience. I regularly run into my fellow Poddies (J. Polton, L. Thomas, M. Di Lorenzo, E. Lane, M. Whitney, B .Baschek), who are now leaders in their subfields. I have written papers with three of them (and counting)! It is a great experience, and a good way to make friends whom you'll see over and over again at conferences.”
“I really enjoyed the experience and it certainly helped a great deal to establish contact to the funding agencies and built a network. PODS was also a great motivation and I am very thankful that I was able to attend. Hard to say how much it really helped the career. I would say noticeable, but not essential.”
“It was a GREAT experience and some of the connections I made then are still active today.”
“It was great experience to present my PhD work to other fellows, very nice environment. It did not obviously help my career but I made good friends which are all over the world now. I think that is a very good idea to get recent PhDs getting together for informal scientific meetings. I also liked that the time for presentation was sufficient (45 min).”
“Overall, it was a good experience. It was valuable being able to talk to other recent graduates about research and career plans, and the advice from the funding agencies was helpful.”
“It was a very good experience. It provided me with a network of peers as well as an opportunity to get to know some program managers.”
“PODS was very beneficial to my career. I learned a lot about some key aspects of proposals. I met program managers and I was able to discuss items in an open environment. Great experience. I recommend future participants to communicate with the program managers; Sponsor recommendation — don't change a thing!!!”
“PODS was a wonderful experience and not only gave me the opportunity to see the types of research going on in my field, but meet others at my stage in their career. It has been invaluable in jump-starting my research and forming new collaborations.”
“It was a great experience. Very helpful to network with other colleagues. I am still in touch with many of them. I would advise to outreach to participants in Latin America, seems they are underrepresented.”
“It was a valuable experience and lots of fun. I appreciated the opportunity to meet representatives from various funding agencies and to get to know my peers from other institutions and hear about their research.”
“I really enjoyed PODS and have kept in contact with some of my fellow participants. Getting our graduating cohort together has been very valuable. I thought the open question and answer sessions were useful. I remember how Russ Davis helped demystify the grant writing process. It was great to meet our funding officers in an informal setting.”
