Deep-sea Partnerships and Data Portals

While HURL is no longer an active member of the deep-sea exploration community, its legacy lives on in this archive in order to continue contributing to the understanding of deep-sea communities, geology, and archeology. There are a number of institutions and organizations around the world that are dedicated to deep-sea exploration, research, and data curation. Below are some of HURL's past partners and colleagues that are currently contributing to exploration and research in the deep Pacific Ocean.

University of Hawai‘i Marine Center

The UH Marine Center, part of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM), is responsible for coordinating operations on the research vessel R/V Kilo Moana (KM) and 6000 meter-capable remotely operated vehicle (ROV), Lu’ukai (sea diver).

Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute

MBARI is a world center for advanced research and education in ocean science and technology in the deep waters of the ocean. They developed the publically available Video Annotation and Reference System (VARS) software that HURL and others have used to annotate observations from video recorded from submarine and ROV missions.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Dedicated to the understanding and stewardship of the environment, a major part of NOAA's core mission is to support ocean research, share that knowledge and information with others, and conserve marine ecosystems and resources. The major departments with work focused on the deep-ocean are:

NOAA Office of Exploration and Research
NOAA Deep-sea Coral Research and Technology Program
NOAA Fisheries

Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration

GFOE designs, builds, and operates robotic platforms that explore the most extreme underwater environments on the planet, from the deep ocean to the largest lakes. They designed and currently operate the NOAA remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Deep Discover (D2) aboard the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer.

Schmidt Ocean Institute

Schmidt Ocean Institute is a private non-profit foundation that provides researchers from around the world access to its research vessel, R/V Falkor, and robotic seagoing systems to foster deeper understanding of the oceans through technological innovation.

Ocean Exploration Trust

The Ocean Exploration Trust launches its mission to explore and seek out new discoveries in the fields of geology, biology, maritime history, archaeology, and chemistry from aboard Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute

WHOI is dedicated to research and education to advance understanding of the ocean and its interaction with the Earth system, and to communicating this understanding for the benefit of society. They operate manned submersibles and robotic systems to explore the deep reaches of the world oceans.

World Register of Marine Species

WoRMS provides an authoritative and comprehensive list of names of marine organisms, including information on synonymy. The database is controlled by taxonomic and thematic experts, providing the most comprehensive and up-to-date taxonomic information possible.
