Conversely, during La Ni\u00f1a events rainfall has been greater than normal, building up Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s groundwater supply. New research published this month in the <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1175\/JCLI-D-14-00638.1\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Journal of Climate<\/i><\/a> by scientists at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101noa<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.nuist.edu.cn\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prh.noaa.gov\/hnl\/\" target=\"_blank\">NOAA\u2019s Honolulu National Weather Service<\/a> (NWS) Office, determined that the relationship between La Ni\u00f1a and rainfall in Hawai\u02bbi has changed and recent La Ni\u00f1a years have brought less-than-normal rainfall. Because the La Ni\u00f1a events have brought excess rainfall to the state in the past, the new information indicating decreased rainfall during recent La Ni\u00f1a events has important implications for agriculture, water resource management and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInitially, this changing relationship between La Ni\u00f1a and Hawai\u02bbi rainfall was brought to my attention by Kevin Kodama [co-author of the paper and hydrologist at NOAA\u2019s Honolulu NWS],\u201d said co-author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/MET\/met_faculty_chu.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Pao-Shin Chu<\/a>, professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/met\/\" target=\"_blank\">Atmospheric Sciences<\/a>\u00a0 and Hawai\u02bbi state climatologist. \u201cHowever, we had no idea when this shift occurred, nor any comprehensive analysis to understand the mechanisms for this change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more about it in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/11\/12\/la-nina-is-not-helping-hawaiis-rainfall-and-groundwater\/\" target=\"_blank\">UH System News<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/raisingislands.blogspot.com\/2015_11_01_archive.html\" target=\"_blank\">Raising Islands<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/khon2.com\/2015\/11\/14\/la-nina-event-no-longer-means-increased-rainfall-for-hawaii\/\" target=\"_blank\">KHON2<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Historically when El Ni\u00f1o events occur, Hawai\u02bbi has experienced nearly six months of drought, from November to April.
