Seth Travis receives Watumull Merit Scholarship
Oceanography graduate student Seth Travis is the 2019-2020 recipient of the J. Watumull Merit Scholarship. The award of $1,500 is presented annually for outstanding scholastic achievement and a desire to improve self and profession.
Travis conducts research with Professor Bo Qiu primarily focusing on mesoscale eddy activity in the Western South Pacific and how it varies over long time scales. More recently, Travis’s work has focused on the interactions between biology and physical forces in the eddies and assessing how chlorophyll levels in the surface of the ocean can be affected by the mesoscale eddies found in the region.
“Receiving this award is meaningful to me. It is wonderful to receive recognition from the department, and it encourages me to continue not just my research work, but my desire to be committed to working in the department, and helping others achieve success in their own research. Finding connection and supporting each other within the program is important to me, and receiving this award is just one way in which I feel the support of the program.”
