The Aloha Cabled Observatory has several instruments on the sea floor (~4,700 meters deep) that are cabled to shore, thus providing real-time data access and power. The UH ship Kilo Moana was at sea this past week with the SOEST ROV Lu’ukai to deploy a new light, a new sensor package (with a hydrophone) and another “node” which will allow for future expansion of the site. The ACO is continuously providing new and interesting insights in to the deep ocean. The image above is one example.
