Atmospheric Sciences professor honored with national teaching award

Jennifer D. Small Griswold, professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences in the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), was honored with the Edward N. Lorenz Teaching Excellence Award by the American Meteorological Society (AMS). The award is given annually to an individual in recognition of sustained outstanding teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and/or graduate or post-doctoral levels and the impact this individual has had on students.
The AMS announcement notes that Griswold was recognized with this award “for visionary, inclusive, innovative teaching that bridges atmospheric science with culture, place, and community, and for sustained mentorship that empowers students across disciplines and backgrounds.”
Griswold teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on weather, climate, Pacific climates, programming for meteorologists, and satellite remote sensing, as well as seminar courses. She also mentors students through engaging research projects as they pursue bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Griswold aims to make atmospheric science relevant by using current weather events, real datasets, and hands-on activities that encourage students to think like scientists rather than simply memorize facts.
“I believe students learn best when they can connect what they’re learning to the world around them,” Griswold said. “Living in Hawaiʻi provides an incredible opportunity to teach through place, so I also incorporate local and Pacific perspectives into my courses, helping students understand how weather and climate influence communities, cultures, and the environment. Above all, I strive to create a classroom where students feel supported, challenged, and comfortable asking questions because that’s where meaningful learning happens.”
Supporting every learner
Griswold has contributed to interdisciplinary teaching, creating a new Climate Science and Society undergraduate certificate program that bridges the gap between climate science and its applications in fields such as economics, policy, health and urban planning. She works to ensure her students feel seen and supported, whether in an introductory undergraduate course or a graduate seminar in meteorology.
“I enjoy teaching students with a wide range of backgrounds—from those taking their very first science course to graduate students preparing for research careers,” Griswold said. “I want all students to feel that they belong in science, so I’m constantly looking for new ways to engage different learning styles and help students build confidence alongside technical skills. My goal is to help every student develop the skills and confidence to understand the atmosphere and apply that knowledge to real-world challenges.”
“It’s especially rewarding to mentor students over several years and watch them develop into confident scientists, educators, and professionals,” she added. “Knowing I’ve played even a small role in their journey is the most fulfilling part of my job.”
In 2025, Griswold was honored with the University of Hawai‘i Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching.
“Receiving the American Meteorological Society’s teaching award is an incredible honor because it recognizes something I care deeply about,” Griswold shared. “Teaching has always been more than delivering content—it’s about inspiring curiosity, mentoring students, and helping them see how atmospheric science connects to their lives and communities. This award is especially meaningful because it comes from my professional community, and I’m truly humbled by the recognition.”
Each year, the American Meteorological Society recognizes outstanding contributions to the weather, water, and climate community by individuals and organizations. Recipients will be honored at the 107th AMS Annual Meeting in Denver, 10–14 January 2027.
