Pacific Islands Chapter of the American Fisheries Society at the University of Hawai‘i

The Student Subunit of the Pacific Islands Chapter of the American Fisheries Society at the University of Hawai’i (UH Subunit) is now officially established. Their mission is to create a supportive and collaborative network of marine focused students, alumni and faculty across UH, and the Pacific Islands.
The American Fisheries Society (AFS) was established in 1870, and has over 8000 members around the world, making it the oldest and largest professional fisheries society. AFS wears many hats in the fisheries world; taking an active role in policy and education/outreach, publishing several scientific journals, and holding workshops and conferences for like-minded early career professionals in fisheries.
The 154th AFS Annual Conference will be hosted in Honolulu, HI from Sept. 15–19, 2024. This will be the first time the annual conference has ever been hosted in Hawai‘i or anywhere in the Pacific Islands. The theme “Conserving Fishes and Fishing Traditions through Knowledge Co-Production” will stimulate a wide range of sessions focusing on the past, present, and future of fisheries conservation and management as we bring together professionals from across North America, the Pacific Islands, and countries throughout the world. The AFS expects several thousand fisheries professionals to attend.
Student members are currently being recruited for the newly established UH subunit. Please reach out to hawaii.afs@gmail.com if you have any questions or are interested in joining.
