LiDAR/multibeam bathymetry mosiac provided by the U.S. Navy through PIBHMC. Bathymetry values shallower than 25 m were derived by gauging the reletive attenuation of blue and green spectral radiance as a function of depth (as gauged by LiDAR data). A multiple linear regression analysis of linearized blue and green band spectral values against depth determined the variables of y-intercept, blue slope and green slope values. Variables then used in multivariate slope intercept formula to derive depth. Variables were adjusted to improve the statistical accuracy and spatial coverage of the final derived bathymetry product. Digital image processing to derive depths conducted with the ENVI 4.5 software program while data editing and integration was performed using ArcGIS 9.3. This dataset is for the shelf environment of Tinian Island, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, USA. Purpose: The data were derived in support of NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program goals. Goal 1 is to map all U.S. Coral Reef Ecosystems. This data set specifically addresses Objective 1 and 4: to develop high-resolution benthic maps and to characterize priority deep water reefs and associated habitats. This integration of derived bathymetry provides a GIS layer with expanded spatial coverage that may be used for benthic and essential fish habitat characterization, and for the study of geologic features. By combining the dataset with other bathymetry, backscatter, derivatives, and in situ data, they collectively compose benthic habitat maps designed to be used to understand and predict shallow depth (0m to 150m) benthic habitats for organisms that inhabit coral reef ecosystems. Supplemental_Information: Gridded LiDAR and multibeam data were provided as an integrated dataset by the U.S. Navy through PIBHMC. No metadata were provided. Original IKONOS imagery was purchased to support the Pacific Islands Geographic Information System (GIS) project and National Ocean Service's (NOS) coral mapping activities. Multiple tools in ArcGIS 9.3 were used for dataset integration and to extract values for the multiple linear regression analysis and subsequent error analyses. The statisitcs program S-Plus was used for the multiple linear regression analysis to provide original variables for depth derivation. The multivariate slope intercept formula used to derive depth was Depth=Yint+(Mblue)(Xblue)+(Mgreen)(Xgreen). Six derived products, two from the image tinian_233_msi.pix (Tin233), two from the image tinian_109297_msi_000_rat.img (Tin297-00) and two from the image tinian_109297_msi_001_rat.img (Tin297-01), were integrated to expand spatial coverage. The original MLR variables for Tin233 were Yint=15.9113, Mblue=-11.1089, and Mgreen=29.2445. The product derived from these variables (Tin233_LiDB) was mosaiced with the product derived using a reduced Y-intercept values of 9.9113 (Tin233_LiDB1) to increase coverage in shallow areas. Data from Tin233_LiDB replaced concurrent data from tin233_LiDB1 during integration due to better statistical accuracy. The original MLR variables for Tin297-00 were Y-int=6.8424, Mblue=-15.0336, and Mgreen=25.0675. The product derived from these variables (Tin29700_LiDB) was mosaiced with the product derived using reduced linearized blue and green band slope values of -8.0337 and 18.0675 (Tin29700_LiDB4) to increase coverage in shallow areas. Data from Tin29700_LiDB replaced concurrent data from Tin29700_LiDB4 during integration due to better statistical accuracy. The original MLR variables for Tin297-01 were Yint=-7.5628, Mblue=-17.6634, and Mgreen=23.1723. The product derived from these variables (Tin29701_LiDB) was mosaiced with the product derived using a reduced Y-intercept value of -7.5628 (Tin29700_LiDB1) to increase coverage in shallow areas. Data from Tin29701_LiDB replaced concurrent data from Tin29701_LiDB1 during integration due to better statistical accuracy. The derived bathymetry mosaics from each image were in turn mosaiced giving the data from image Tin297-01 first priority, Tin233 second priority and Tin297-00 third priority due to the better statistical accuracy. Data from higher priority datasets replaces that of lower priority datasets where data are concurrent. This mosaiced derived bathymetry product was named TinLiDBallMos.
