For over 50 years, Makai Ocean Engineering has been a global leader in providing innovative subsea engineering solutions. This seminar provides an overview of Makai’s current portfolio and its strategic vision. As a Hawaii-based firm with national and international clients, Makai often sits at the intersection of the global marine economy. Current initiatives highlight Makai’s expertise. Makai continues to excel in the market with its proprietary software, MakaiPlan and MakaiLay, facilitating high-accuracy installation of telecom and power cables. Under recent government contracts, Makai is developing cutting-edge marine technologies, such as the Remote Anchoring and Micropiling (RAMP) system for coastal and offshore platforms, and the Rapid Resilient Reefs for Coastal Defense (R3D) project with University of Hawaii, among numerous other research and development efforts. Makai has recently designed submarine pipelines throughout the world and expanded capabilities for installation of submarine cable systems, while continuing to advance Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) and Seawater Air Conditioning (SWAC) to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Looking ahead, Makai’s future vision includes a diversified portfolio, with technologies for subsea automation and coastal resiliency, AI-enabled software, and expanding products and services for the global submarine cable industry. This talk will explore some of the history of Makai, current projects, and future direction to provide an update and identify opportunities for engagement with students and staff of University of Hawaii.
