MTS-Sponsored Seminar: Natural Hybrid Infrastructure for Coastal Resilience in the Pacific

This seminar is sponsored by our Marine Technology Society Student Section!
Michael Foley, Ph.D., P.E.
Senior Coastal Engineer – EA Engineering, Science and Technology
*In-person ONLY (POST 723)*
*request Zoom Link here for extenuating circumstances by Wednesday (2/4) @ 11:59 pm HST
Coastal communities are facing accelerating hazards that threaten public spaces, roadways, utilities, homes, and businesses. Traditional development strategies such as hardened shorelines, graded coastal plains, and armored channels often fail to capture the value provided by natural systems. Drawing on 20 years of experience addressing coastal hazard risks in Hawaiʻi, Dr. Foley will discuss the importance of a regional, systems‑based approach to coastal design. He will highlight the role of natural hybrid infrastructure, which integrates ecosystem services with coastal structures to improve long‑term benefits, performance, and resilience. Mike will share examples of NHI elements incorporated into past projects and describe EA Engineering’s current efforts to enhance coastal resilience across the Pacific and nationwide.
