Alaa Ahmed is an Ocean Engineer at Atargis Energy Corporation, where she works on the design, modeling, and experimental testing of lift-based wave energy converters. Her current work focuses on advancing wave energy device performance through hydrodynamic analysis, scaled testing, and system-level design considerations to support commercialization and real-world deployment. Previously, Alaa was a Postdoctoral Associate at the SEA Lab at Cornell University, where her research centered on hybrid offshore wind–wave energy systems. She led efforts to develop comprehensive frameworks for evaluating hybrid configurations that integrate offshore wind turbines with wave energy converters, accounting for site- specific conditions, coupled dynamic responses, techno-economic performance, and stakeholder considerations. Alaa earned her PhD in Ocean Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 2023, where her doctoral research focused on the hydrodynamic performance and control of wave energy converters. She implemented multi-fidelity numerical simulations validated through wave-tank experiments to analyze a dual-flap floating oscillating surge wave energy converter at full scale. Her work included system identification, development of state-space models, and the implementation of active control strategies to enhance power capture. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering (2014) and Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (2017) from Cairo University, Egypt. Alaa’s research interests span marine renewable energy systems, unsteady hydrodynamics, fluid–structure interaction, hybrid offshore platforms, and the integration of wave energy into resilient and cost-effective offshore energy systems.
