Briggs is the lead developer of a novel, solid-state, reagentless sensor capable of rapid and near-simultaneous measurement (<60 s) of seawater pH and Total Alkalinity (At ). This prototype pH-A T sensor (Sea-pHAt ) utilizes ion sensitive field effect transistor (ISFET) pH sensing technology coupled with a coulometric diffusion titration (CDT) technique to additionally measure A T . What really sets the Sea-pHAt sensor apart is the ability to measure two carbon system parameters on similar time-scales on one chip.

Additionally, Sea-pHA T has a small footprint, requires no external reagents, has low power consumption, and meets the rigorous demands required by autonomous platforms such as profiling floats and for remote deployments. There are currently no commercially available sensors capable of measuring 2 carbon system parameters autonomously. The present ‘gold standard’ for measuring the aqueous carbon dioxide system parameters typically requires cumbersome benchtop analytical techniques, with >10 minutes per single sample and requires an experienced chemist. The Sea-pHAt sensor is a first of its kind single dip probe that can fully constrain the CO2 system variables in under 1 minute. With streamlined software, more rigorous characterization of long-term performance, and thorough documentation of data quality control procedures, the Sea-pHAt has great potential for use by non-expert scientists in a variety of settings from benchtop to in the field on a variety of platforms. In this talk, Briggs will provide an update on the progression of the technology and address some of the challenges of making in situ observations.
