Seminar: Feasibility Study for 50 10MW Floating Wind Turbines South of Oahu

Offshore wind energy sites have been developed successfully all over the world, making it a mature and reliable technology for Hawai’i. Hawai’i has year-round trade winds that represent a steady source of renewable energy supply.
The ORE 783 capstone class has conducted a feasibility study for the development of offshore wind around Oahu. Taking wind climate, wave climate, bathymetry and all other important factors into consideration, the class determined the site, platform type, cable route, and cost estimate for the development of offshore wind energy. Based on the projected costs for the project the class was able to determine if the project is economically viable based on various projections of future energy costs. The next step would be to create a detailed design for project implementation.
