In the latest ShanghaiRanking 2025 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Department of Oceanography has achieved its strongest performance to date, rising to #5 in the United States and #7 in the world for research excellence in oceanogrpahy.

This ranking—compiled by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy and based on nine objective research indicators including world-class faculty, high-impact research output, and international collaboration—evaluates thousands of institutions across roughly 57 academic subjects and nearly 2,000 universities globally.

The rise to these top-tier standings is part of a steady upward trajectory for Mānoaʻs oceanography program over the past six years and highlights the Department’s sustained commitment to advancing ocean science through world-class research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and broad international engagement.

These distinguished rankings reinforce the Department’s global reputation as a leader in oceanographic research, helping to attract top scholars, foster strategic partnerships, and expand our impact on the future of ocean science.
