Biography:
Despite being a small fraction of the ocean, coastal ecosystems contribute to a disproportionate amount of fisheries catch and primary production while also being disproportionately impacted by anthropogenic stressors relative to other marine ecosystems. In our lab, we study coastal marine ecosystems, including coral reef and rocky intertidal habitats, using quantitative, ecological, and biogeochemical tools. Our major foci are: 1) assessing the impacts of anthropogenic stressors (temperature, ocean acidification, and eutrophication) on organismal to ecosystem processes, 2) quantifying how interactions between climate stressors and natural variability drive communities interactions and ecosystems processes across multiple spatial scales, 3) characterizing feedbacks between global climate change stressors and ecosystem functioning, and 4) characterizing the biogeochemical and ecological consequences of submarine groundwater discharge.
