My lab studies the ocean today and throughout Earth history with an emphasis on carbonate chemistry, carbonate sediments, and the carbonate rock record. We investigate the role of marine calcifying organisms in the oceanic carbon cycle, subseafloor processes and their effects on ocean chemistry, and develop and evaluate ocean-based carbon sequestration strategies. Ongoing projects include fish-produced carbonates in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, subseafloor carbon cycling in Baffin Bay and along the Great Bahama Bank, ocean alkalinity enhancement and engineered alkalinity production via enhanced mineral dissolution, and laboratory experiments on carbonate mineral formation, dissolution, and alteration. We also examine elemental incorporation and isotope fractionation in carbonates (carbon, iodine, barium, uranium, and sulfate) to evaluate and develop new paleo proxies.
