Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Andrea Kealoha and Dr. Nyssa Silbiger Featured on KITV Discussing Coral Reefs and Climate Change

A new global report warns coral reefs have already reached a climate tipping point, dying faster than they can naturally recover.

The Department of Oceanography is proud to recognize Dr. Andrea Kealoha and Dr. Nyssa Silbiger for being featured on KITV’s Island News, where they shared their expertise on the urgent state of coral reefs in Hawaiʻi and encouraged restoration efforts targeting climate resilience.

In a news segment and accompanying article “Coral reefs have reached a climate tipping point, but Hawaiʻi researchers say hope remains,” Dr. Kealoha and Dr. Silbiger discussed the findings of the Global Tipping Points Report, which identifies coral reefs as the first major ecosystem to cross a climate threshold.

Despite the challenges, both scientists emphasized that there is still time for action — through reef restoration, pollution reduction, and collective community efforts to cut global CO₂ emissions.
