Title:  A Candle in the Dark: Physics Driving Subsurface Chlorophyll Maximum Responses

Abstract: Deep or Subsurface Chlorophyll Maxima (SCMs) are ubiquitous in stratified oceans and are particularly important in oligotrophic environments, where they play a key role in the planktonic ecosystem. A range of physical and biological mechanisms have been proposed to explain their formation and variability. In this talk, I focus on bottom-up controls, emphasizing the role of physical processes in shaping SCM structure and evolution. I present two case studies: a snapshot of a mesoscale eddy off southeastern Brazil and observations from a tropical storm in the Bay of Bengal. My goal is to identify the dominant physical drivers of chlorophyll variability and link these signals to dynamical processes spanning from mesoscale to internal waves.
