JEDI: Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

The Department of Earth Sciences strives for all people to thrive personally and professionally. To do so, we promote:

The four JEDI principles benefit everyone, not just marginalized groups. Science is a machine that is run by people, and we achieve optimal solutions when we incorporate diverse people. We, by proxy of the University, serve the state of Hawaiʻi and the people, which we should represent in our values and demographics. As a department, we will aim to celebrate indigeneous ways of knowing, and empower historically marginalized groups (recruit, retain, and promote). As individuals, we shall be actively anti-discriminatory and welcoming of differences.

Faculty JEDI Committee: The Earth Sciences Committee on Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is composed of faculty and staff driven to bring about change for greater justice, equity, diversity and Inclusion in our department and in the geosciences in general. We serve as liaisons between the Department and the UH Mānoa campus, and as advocates for our students on JEDI issues.
