General info about this cruise, provided by SOEST Young Investigator, Stephanie Ingle.

This expedition is the third trip to a previous hole (1256D) begun during Leg 206

Location: Guatemala basin, east of the East Pacific Rise, 6 degrees, 44 minutes North

Mission: to recover a complete section of upper oceanic crust formed at a superfast spreading center (basalts,
dykes, and gabbros)

Current status: coring of rock at 1270 mbsf

My job:
inorganic geochemist. My team of 2 Japanese scientists and myself will choose samples from the cores to
analyze using our shipboard instruments. Technicians on the ship help by crushing, powdering, and dissolving the
samples for analsis.

My hours: 18:00 to 06:00 (dog shift)

Fun Facts: Meals are served 4 times per day as shifts are 12 hours and this ship operates 24 hours a day. Cookie breaks are at mid-points between the meals. Meals are buffet style, typically including 3 entrees, steamed vegetable, french fries, salad as long as it lasts, and desserts. A machine dispensing ice cream is available and yoghurt is made on the ship. You can also request omlettes or pancakes to order.
