Our laboratory facility operates at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa within the School of Ocean & Earth Science & Technology (SOEST). Dr. Brian Popp, Departments of Geology and Geophysics and Oceanography, is the Director of the Biogeochemical Stable Isotope Laboratories. Our lab houses 5 Finnigan/Thermo Finnigan/Thermo Scientific gas ratio mass spectrometers, 3 Trace gas chromatographs, 2 Costech Instruments Elemental Combustion Systems and a GasBench II.  We also have a Picarro cavity rindown spectrometer. Below are descriptions of various equipment in our lab.

Thermo Finnigan DeltaPlus XP

Our DeltaPlus XP is equipped with dual inlet capabilities is interfaced with a Costech Instruments Elemental Combustion System.  The primary use of this mass spectrometer is to determine the δ15N and δ13C values of a variety of solid samples, such as plant, animal tissue, and samples on glass fiber filters.

Thermo Scientific Delta V Advantage

Our Delta V Advantage is coupled to a second Costech Instruments Elemental Combustion System. This system is primarily used for determining the δ15N and δ13C values of a variety of isotopically enriched solid samples, such as plant, animal tissue, and samples on glass fiber filters

Thermo Scientific Delta Q

The Delta Q is coupled to a the GasBench II peripheral which allows us to analyze either the δ13C values of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) or the δ15N and δ18O of dissolved nitrate+nitrite in fresh or seawater.

Thermo Scientific Delta V Plus

Our Delta V Plus is interfaced with a Thermo Finnigan Trace GC/GC-CIII interface for determining the δ15N, δ13C and δD values of individual compounds.  The primary use for this mass spectrometer is for the analysis of the δ15N values of individual amino acids.

Thermo Scientific MAT253

Our MAT253 is equipped with a Thermo Scientific Trace GC Ultra with a TriPlus autosampler and a Thermo Finnigan Trace GC/GC-CIII interface for determining the δ15N, δ13C and δD values of a variety of individual compounds. The primary uses for this instrument are analysis of either δ15N or δ13C in individual amino acids.

Picarro

Our fully-automated Picarro L2130-i CRDS Isotopic H2O analyzer allows automated hydrogen and oxygen isotopic measurements of both fresh and seawater samples at an affordable price.
