The Research Experience for Teachers in Volcano-Petrology (RET/V-P) was the central outreach activity supported by Hammer's CAREER award (2005-2009). Hailing from local middle and high schools, the 15 teachers who participated in the workshops each teach 3-5 classes of 20-25 students, for a total of 1500 middle-school students per year at the 6th-8th grade levels. The program also contributed to the training of graduate students and undergraduate students as mentors.
