Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Paleoclimatology

The Department of Earth Sciences in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of paleoclimatology. We seek a scholar who develops records that enhance our understanding of past and present climate dynamics, and inform projections of future climate. Candidates are encouraged to describe how their research addresses recent climate change, potential mitigation strategies, coupled human–natural systems, or societal implications of their work. Gordon A. Macdonald Professor (or Associate Professor) of Volcanology and Hawaiʻi State Volcanologist

The Department of Earth Sciences in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Associate or Full Professor in the broad area of Volcano Science, to begin in Fall 2026. The successful candidate will be an expert in the study of volcanic processes and eruption products with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching related to active volcanic systems. The incumbent is expected to establish an externally funded research program supporting graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction, and mentor students and postdoctoral researchers. They will serve as a public resource on Hawaiian volcanoes, liaising with the staff of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and serving as the State Volcanologist for Hawai‘i.

Geomorphology of Ocean Islands (Assistant Professor)

The Department of Earth Sciences in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa seeks to fill a faculty position in Geomorphology of Ocean Islands, to begin in Fall 2026.  We seek a dynamic scholar whose work integrates cutting-edge Earth Science and Indigenous Knowledge to understand the geologic formation and evolution of island landscapes and their reciprocal relationships with land stewardship on Pacific islands. 

Graduate Student Opportunities

The Geophysics and Tectonics Division welcomes applications for graduate assistantships by individuals with interests and ambition in research related to controlled-  and passive-source seismology, potential fields, or geodynamics modeling.  Outstanding applicants have strong preparation in math and physics as well as experience in computer programming and Earth and/or Planetary Sciences.
