Hanamāʻulu, Kauaʻi

The Nukoli’i study area (transects 145 – 239) is located on the east coast of Kauaʻi. The area extends from Nukoli’i Beach to Hanamāʻulu Bay. The shoreline is composed of carbonate sand beach, exposed beach rock and engineered jetties with a fringing reef offshore. The area experiences persistent tradewinds and rough seas throughout the year.

Overall, the area is undergoing erosion with an average shoreline change rate of -0.8 ft/yr. The area lends itself to division into two distinct sections. The northern section is Nukoli’i Beach (transects 145 – 219). This area has experienced erosion over time with an average shoreline change rate of -0.9 ft/yr. The southern portion is Hanamāʻulu Bay (transects 220 – 239). This section of shoreline has experienced erosion with an average shoreline change rate of -0.4 ft/yr. Previous studies* found similar trends in shoreline change for the Nukoli’i study area.
