Given its unique geographic location CIMAR is primed to conduct research necessary for understanding and predicting environmental change in the Pacific Islands Region, conserving and managing coastal and marine resources in island environments, and supporting the region’s economic, social, and environmental needs. From its original research themes (Equatorial Oceanography, Climate, and Tsunamis and other Long-period Waves), CIMAR research now encompasses eight themes, all aligned with the NOAA strategic plan and the University’s Indo-Pacific Mission.
This theme‘s research focuses on enabling an ecosystem approach to management in the Pacific Islands region, and on science support for the delivery of ecosystem services.

Focused on the Pacific Ocean Basin, research under this theme is associated with the collection and analysis of physical, biological, and chemical observations of the ocean that will yield valuable information about large-scale ocean property distributions and currents, including their variability over long time scales.

Research in this theme is associated with coastal and deep ocean observations, air-/space-borne remote sensing (e.g., planes, satellites), and economic and social observing systems to understand the present state of the various ecological, environmental, economic, and social parameters in the Pacific Islands region.
