Dr. Bin Chen received the NSF CAREER Award for his proposed project entitled "CAREER: Elasticity and Lattice Dynamics of Iron Alloys Under Earth's Core Conditions". The award starts Feb. 15, 2016 and ends Jan. 31, 2021. University of Hawaii News.
Dr. Yanbin Wang from the Center for Advanced Radiations (CARS) of the University of Chicago visited our Mineral Physics Laboratory. He gave a talk entitled "Large-volume high-pressure research at the Advanced Photo Source" at the HIGP seminars on Jan 13, 2016.

Dr. Bin Chen attended the AGU fall meeting in San Francisco, CA and gave an invited talk entitled "Physical properties of Fe-Ni-C liquids at high pressures: A combined experimental and theoretical approach" in DI52A: Melt and Liquids in Earth and Planetary Interiors III on December 18, 2015. He was the covenor for the Mineral and Rock Physics session -- "Physics and Chemistry of Earth's Deep Mantle and Core" and also chaired a Mineral and Rock Physics session--"MR23B: Physics and Chemistry of Earth's Deep Mantle and Core I Posters".
With deep sadness, we share the news of John Balogh's passing on November 14, 2015. A Mechanical Engineer in HIGP since 1970, John's work made the HIGP high-pressure mineral physics lab one of the top versatile high-pressure labs in the world. His significant contributions in designing, constructing, and maintaining the state-of-the art facilities have enabled innumerable students, researchers, and faculty members to carry out first-time unique high P-T experiments here and at the synchrotron X-ray source at Argonne National Laboratory. John will be truly missed.
Our mineral physics group participated in the SOEST Open House and demonstrated Squeezing Water Into Ice in a Diamond Anvil Cell to hundreds of K-12 students, parents, and general public.
Dr. Bin Chen and graduate student Xiaojing Lai attended the COMPRES annual meeting in Colorado Rivers, CO, and presented their recent research results.
Prof. Robert Liebermann, from Stony Brook University, visited our Mineral Physics Laboratory. He gave a talk entitled "Indoor vs Outdoor Geophysics" at the HIGP seminars on Mar 5, and a talk entitled "Indoor Seismology: Probing the Earth’s Interior using Sound Velocity Measurements at High Pressures and Temperatures in Conjunction with Synchrotron X-radiation" in the TGIF colloquium on Mar. 6.
Dr. Bin Chen attended the CSEDI Science Plan Workshop held in Scripps Institution of Oceanology, UC San Diego.

He also chaired two Mineral and Rock Physics sessions--"MR22A: Physics and Chemistry of the Deep Earth II" and "MR41A: Physics and Chemistry of the Deep Earth IV Posters".
Dr. Bin Chen gave a seminar talk entitled "Shear softening in dense Fe$_7$C$_3$: Implications of carbon in Earth's inner core" at the High Pressure Special Interest Group Meeting at HPCAT of the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory.
