Dr. Bin Chen and PhD student Xiaojing Lai appeared in ThinkTech Hawaii to talk about their research on “carbon in the deep Earth” and “high-pressure ices”. The topic is “Experimental Simulations of Planetary Interiors”.
The mineral physics group had a group picnic in the Magic Island to say farewell to Zhiyuan Ren, who spent about a month as a summer student intern in the group and welcome our newest group member Yihang Fang who just joined our group as a Ph.D. student.
Yihang Fang joined the Mineral Physics Laboratory as a Ph.D. graduate student. He received his M.S. degree in Geology from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2016. Welcome, Yihang!
Dr. Bin Chen and graduate student Xiaojing Lai attended the AGU Fall meeting at San Francisco, from December 11 to December 15. Dr. Chen gave a talk on "Experimental and Theoretical Investigations on Viscosity of Fe-Ni-C Liquids at High Pressures" and Xiaoing presented a poster entitled "Thermal Equation of State of Fe7C3 by Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction with Implications for Carbon in the Inner Core".
Dr. Bin Chen received a research grant from the NSF Geophysics program: Studies of the Earth's Deep Interior for his proposed project entitled "CSEDI Collaborative Research: Experimental and Theoretical Investigations on the Elastic and Viscoelastic Properties of Fe-Ni-C Liquids". The award starts July. 15, 2016 and is expected to end on June 30, 2019.
Zhiyuan Ren and Siheng Wang, undergraduate students from University of Science and Technology of China, joined the mineral physics group as summer student interns. Welcome Zhiyuan and Siheng!
Dr. Bin Chen and graduate student Xiaojing Lai attended the COMPRES annual meeting held at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort in New Mexico and presented their recent research results. Bin gave a talk on "Viscosity of Fe-Ni-C liquids at high pressures" and Xiaojing presented a poster on "Thermal Equation of State of Fe7C3 by Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction". Bin also served in the panel discussion for students and postdocs: "Communicating Science (Grant Writing and Proposal Writing)" together with Lisa Danielson (Jacobs, NASA JSC), Steven Jacobsen (Northwestern University), Jackie Li (University of Michigan), and Tracy Rushmer (Macquarie University, Australia).
Dr. Bin Chen appeared in the ThinkTech Hawaii to talk about his mineral physics research on Earth and planetary cores. The topic is The Core: Mineral Physics Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Mineral Physics Laboratory graduate student Lai Xiaojing has been selected by the Department of Geology and Geophysics to be the Department recipient of the 2016-2017 J. Watumull Merit Scholarship. Congratulations Xiaojing!
