Graduate student Xiaojing Lai's paper on anisotropic thermal expansivity of Fe~7~C~3~ was cited as highlights and breakthroughs article in American Mineralogist
Bin Chen, Xiaojing Lai, Yingxin Liu, and Feng Zhu attended the AGU Fall Meeting on Feb 10-14 in Washington DC. They presented their recent research results at the meeting.
Dr. Feng Zhu from the University of Michigan joined the mineral physics group as a Postdoctoral Scholar. Welcome Feng!
Dr. Bin Chen gave an invited talk titled "Caron in Earth's core: A mineral physics perspective" at the 2018 AOGS 15th Annual Meeting in Honolulu.
Kelsey Nichols from the Global Environmental Science program at the University of Hawaii joined our group to conduct a nine-week summer research program supported by the NSF REU program- ESVI: Earth Science on Volcanic Islands at the Department of Geology and Geophysics of the University of Hawaii. Welcome Kelsey
She will be synthesizing large nano-crystalline diamond from graphite using the multi-anvil press in the mineral physics laboratory. The synthesized diamonds will be probed by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and Transmission Electron Microprobe. The synthesized diamond will have potential academic and industrial applications.
Dr. Bin Chen gave a research talk on "Elasticity of single crystal ice VII synthesized in externally heated diamond anvil cell" at the Infrared Spectroscopy Workshop at the NSLS-II & CFN Users' Meeting in the Brookhaven National Laboratory on May 23rd, 2018.
The manuscript led by Dr. Bin Chen entitled "Experimental constraints on the sound velocities of cementite Fe3C to core pressures" has been accepted for publication in the journal "Earth and Planetary Science Letters". Link to the paper.
Dr. George Amulele visits the Mineral Physics Laboratory. He will be working on the 1000-ton multi-anvil press and the 250-ton cubic press. Welcome George!
Dr. Bin Chen visited the Department of Earth and Space Science of the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, Anhui Province, China. He was invited to give a research talk titled "Influence of carbon on properties of solid iron under core conditions: Hidden carbon reservoirs in Earth's core" at the Geophysics Seminar on December 24, 2017. He also gave a talk on "The fate of deeply subducted carbon during slab-mantle interactions" at the Geochemistry Seminar on December 25, 2017.
Dr. Yingxin Liu from the China University of Geosciences (Beijing) joined our group. Welcome Yingxin!
