It is a part of the developing new culture of science where more is gained by sharing information than by locking it away in dark filing cabinets. This repository is also a means to provide information about data — metadata — in a way that satisfies well-developed, open standards. It also assists “data rescue” by providing a means of archiving and documenting data in jeopardy of being lost forever.
