[ Web Site Policies Page: Basic PoliciesWeb Contacts | Basic Guidelines | “Top Level” Requirements ]

Required for ALL SOEST Pages

At the very least, all SOEST web pages should adhere to the following five guidelines:

  1. HTML documents should have a unique title in the header area.
  2. HTML documents should clearly identify the author and / or person responsible for the page, including an e-mail address for this person and the date the page was last modified.
  3. HTML documents and their called images, applets, and scripts should function properly once they are linked on the server.
  4. HTML content should be compliant with W3C guidelines for Web Accessibility (priority 1 only). You can test your page(s) using WebXACT.
  5. HTML documents should have a link back to the SOEST and / or unit page from which it is linked (both graphically and through a text link if possible.
  6. The icon for the link back to the SOEST home page at www.soest.hawaii.edu is:
SOEST oval graphic to be used as button to link to SOEST home page

A Note on Content

Although SOEST supports freedom of expression and content in pages located on our servers, we must reserve the right to un-link any documents violating University of Hawaii guidelines regarding discrimination of any kind, and / or any pages containing blatantly sexual content.

Please use your best judgment, as this is a publicly funded institution of higher learning dedicated to dissemination of knowledge to the public we serve.

SOEST-Level Page Requirements

The guidelines and requirements for inclusion on the “top level” pages in the SOEST site are discussed in detail elsewhere. The pages themselves, and those currently linked to and described on them, should give you a good idea of the requirements for inclusion.

General Design and Layout

Our most important rule is to keep it simple. Overwhelming a page’s content with flashy technique makes it slow to load and, more important, difficult to navigate. Even if your visitors have unlimited bandwidth, they will rarely have unlimited time.

We encourage SOEST web developers to coordinate with Brooks Bays (design) as part of our efforts to develop a more cohesive feel to SOEST’s web presence, while maintaining individual and project identities on lower-level pages.
