Expectations

Through their participation in guided laboratory research, teachers will contribute to the goals of the NSF-funded project, which include (1) evaluating and tuning models of textural evolution, (2) quantitatively comparing experimental and natural crystal textures in order to infer magmatic processes during volcanic eruptions, and (3) improving understanding of crystal nucleation and growth processes as they occur in nature.
The broader impacts of the research include this RET/V-P program to improve the content knowledge and inquiry skills of teachers (and therefore students) in Hawaii’s K-12 schools.  Teachers are expected to contribute to these goals by (a) creating a Learning Results Portfolio that includes narrative descriptions of how the educational goals of participation are addressed and put into practice during the fall semester, (b) providing feedback during participation and at regular intervals during the fall semester, (c) reflecting upon the strategies and educational outcomes of the RET/V-P program immediately following completion and over the longer term. Teachers will be asked to supply qualitative and quantitative measures of student learning, such as narratives and pre- and post-participation test or lab scores.
