Implementing SSL/TLS in Thunderbird

Windows and Mac: Select Tools --> Account Setting --> Server Settings.
Unix: Select Edit --> Account Setting --> Server Settings.

Incoming Server Settings

Server	Your SOEST mail server
Port	993 (imap)  /  995 (pop3)
Username	Your SOEST username
Connection Security	SSL/TLS
Authentication	Normal Password

Add a server in Outgoing Server (SMTP) with the following Settings
Either connection security setting should work.

Server Name	smtp-server.soest.hawaii.edu	smtp-server.soest.hawaii.edu
Port	587	465
Connection Security	STARTTLS	SSL/TLS
Authentication	Normal Password	Normal Password
Username	Your SOEST username	Your SOEST username

Go back to your main email account listing (on the left)
Ensure that smtp-server is your SMTP server for this account.
