Using SSH for Mac

How do I use SSH to log into my SOEST account?

NOTE:

Currently, the only way to use SSH to access your SOEST account from a Macintosh is by using a terminal window from within Internet Explorer (you will need to use IE version 4.0 or higher).  A problem exists when using Netscape Navigator.  The issue is being addressed, but no completion date is available at this time.

NOTE:

The following procedure also works for PCs and Suns using compatible browsers (IE and Netscape).

NOTE:

SSH is supported only by SOEST servers.  Those using their UH Unix accounts can only use telnet.

First open up your web browser as if you were planning to surf the web.

In the address bar type in http://puka.soest.hawaii.edu.  You will get a window similar to this one.  Please be patient, it may take a minute or two for the applet to load up.

At the prompt, type in your login name and password.

You will get the following prompt and list of options that are available to use.

Since there are no user directories on puka, you must SSH to the server which your home directory is located, i.e. akule, iniki, mano, etc.  (If you do not know where your home directory is, please contact RCF.)

To get to your home directory, type ssh servername, where servername is the server you want to connect to.

You will also be asked to type in your password again.

That's it!  Now you can do everything that you would normally do as if you were using telnet.

NOTE:

After logging out from your session, please exit out of puka before closing the terminal window (see below).
Failing to do so might cause puka to hang.
