Lidar Systems and Measurements
We (Dr. Sharma and Dr. Lienert and I) began using lidars in the 90s
when we built and used a scanning lidar at Bellows Beach for coastal
aerosol studies (see http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/lidar). Since then I
have build several smaller lidar systems for atmospheric research and
Dr. Sharma has develop Stand-Off Raman systems. The image below
shows the aerosol scattering coefficient obtained from a small lidar
system while driving around the south-east corner of Oahu on a strong
trade wind day. The aerosol extinction coeffient values have been
constrained by sumultaneous sun photometer measurements. The dark brown
regions are clouds.
