PODS VI had 25 attendees. Based on 14 returned surveys and web-research, currently (2013), 18 of them hold jobs in academia, 5 in government, and 2 in private firms.
“It was a great opportunity to meet new people, some of whom i am still in touch with. Most of all, it was great to meet the program managers and find out that they are very human and genuinely concerned to see careers happen.”
“It was a very good experience. I met with young reserachers and experienced one, it was a good balance. I learn what we can expect in our work but also what are the main problems for young researchers like us. I recommend to anyone to apply to PODS.”
“I learned a lot about how funding works that I didn’t learn in grad school. It was a good experience. It was nice to meet some fellow students that I’ve talked to at various conferences since PODS.”
“It certainly helped my career. Shell is looking for outstanding PhDs, and PODS gave me an edge. It meant I was part of a select group of people that made the cut. It was a very good experience, although I decided to leave science after all.”
“The PODS Meeting was a great experience. It's a fantastic opportunity to meet nice people from around the globe that are at the same career stage, learn about the research they are doing and exchange ideas and experiences.”
“I think besides giving the formal longer talk (20 to 40 min), the students could prepare a very short talk (2 minutes, 1 to 2 slides only) to the DISCO group and vice-versa. My advisor use to call this the ‘elevator talk’. That would be fun and it would probably promote some interdisciplinary collaborations.”
“PODS was a great experience. It helped me to meet and connect with others at the same stage in our career and learn about the diverse research interests in our field. I have recommended the symposium to other students and strongly suggested to them to apply. Everything during the symposium was interesting and helpful and no minute wasted.”
“Great experience, very useful especially for people from outside the US to get to know more US researchers and develop a network there.”
“It was a great experience. I enjoyed lots of high quality scientific talks and discussions as well as warm atmosphere to share interesting ideas. Also I was able to learn how to write a good proposal by having a constructive discussion session with representatives from funding agencies.”
“I thought it was great for networking with my peers. I enjoyed the whole event.”
“It was a good experience and helpful for my career. It broadened my view in this area.”
