1998-2004: Chair of the DEep Submergence Science Committee (DESSC) OF UNOLS
 

Alvin-pilot's-eye view of a line handler during launch.  In 1987 I first used Alvin to explore the serpentine mud volcanoes of the Mariana forearc region.  This started a fascination with submergence science and really weird greenish-blue mud.

I participated in ODP Leg 195 to Drill a serpentinite mud volcano on the southern Mariana forearc.  Most recently (January - March 2005), I participated on IODP Expedition 305 to drill at the Atlantis Core Complex.
